Like its equally infamous successor, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, there is very little gore. However, it’s the suggestion of violence that makes it even more disturbing. Its visceral brutality is more repulsive than engrossing, but The Last House on the Left nevertheless introduces director Wes Craven as a distinctive voice in horror.
Rare or lost scenes

Enraged, the father takes on the gang single-handedly and murders them. Setting aside the modern details, this is roughly the plot of Ingmar Bergman's "The Virgin Spring." A mixture of red and blue food coloring mixed with caramel syrup was used for the fake blood, which - contrary to most movie blood - actually looks real. Welcome to Guilty Pleasures, the show where we give into pleasure, rising from our coffins to discuss a modern horror film and debating just how guilty we need to feel about loving or hating it. As far as effects are concerned, fake intestines were made from condoms filled with fake blood and sand. The rest of the bleeding was achieved with blood pouches and capsules.

Krug attempts to flee, but after being cornered by a traumatized Sadie and a chainsaw-wielding John, he is incapacitated by an electrocution booby trap. Sadie, now terrified of both Krug and John, runs outside. After a scuffle between her and Estelle, she falls into the backyard swimming pool where her throat is slit by Estelle. The sheriff arrives just as John kills Krug with the chainsaw. The documentary-style shooting of the film creates a “home movie” effect, which adds to the realism. Scenes of rape and torture are intercut with scenes of animatedly happy birthday cake making and bumbling cops set to lively rustic country music.
The Last House on the Left has left its mark on horror history. There’s no doubt that the film influenced future films. Echoes of this film can be seen in Grindhouse (2007) and especially Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects (2005). You can see the influence of this film in how the homicidal Firefly family interacts with each other and with their victims. The story is also based on a true incident, we're told at the beginning of the movie, but I have my doubts; I think the producers may simply be trying one of those "only the names have been changed" capers. What does come through in "Last House on the Left" is a powerful narrative, told so directly and strongly that the audience (mostly in the mood for just another good old exploitation film) was rocked back on its psychic heels.
In a scene where Mari is ordered to piss her pants, actress Sandra Peabody did actually piss her pants. Infamous reputation aside, the film served as a starting point for two filmmakers who would go on to create and contribute to two major horror franchises. Producer Sean Cunningham served as producer and co-creator of the Friday the 13th franchise and writer and director Wes Craven, is the legendary creator of the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.
Phyllis tries to escape and reason with them, but she fails and is gang-raped. Meanwhile, Mari's unsuspecting parents prepare a surprise party for her. Craven cut the film numerous times for the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) to rate it R. Internationally, the United Kingdom refused to certify the film for release, and while briefly released on home video in the 1980s, the "video nasty" scare led to the banning of the film until 2002.
Horror History: The Last House on the Left (
The deputy recalls another time when the man disappeared shortly before his collie gave birth to a litter of puppies. This scene reminded me of Zombie’s “chicken lover” in The Devil’s Rejects. One scene in Last House is very much like a scene in The Devil’s Rejects. In The Devil’s Rejects, The Firefly family holds a group of musicians hostage in a motel room.
I don't want to give the impression, however, that this is simply a good horror movie. It's horrifying, all right, but in ways that have nothing to do with the supernatural. It's the story of two suburban girls who go into the city for a rock concert, are kidnapped by a gang of sadistic escaped convicts and their sluttish girlfriend, and are raped and murdered. Then, in a coincidence even the killers find extreme, the gang ends up spending the night at the home of one of the girls' parents. Mari Collingwood plans to attend a concert with her friend Phyllis Stone for her seventeenth birthday.
Wes Craven later used the name, KRUG in "A Nightmare On Elm Street" for the films villain, "Freddy KRUEGer. Both of which in films are teenager murderers. Estelle pretends to seduce Weasel, bites off his penis, and leaves him to bleed to death. John takes his shotgun and shoots at Krug and Sadie. Krug escapes into the living room and overpowers John before manipulating Junior into killing himself.
Distributor Hallmark Releasing, in partnership with American International Pictures, gave him and Craven funding after the box office success of Cunningham's Together (1971). The movie spends a little time with them having conversations that would be typical for young women to have before heading off to the city for their concert. Each talks about their fantasies regarding members of a rock band that they’re about to see perform in the city over some drinks in the woods. There’s also some irreverent comic relief in Last House that can be seen in Zombie’s films. For example, there’s a scene where the sheriff and deputy are talking about a local man who recently disappeared from town with his pig. The sheriff says that the man wants to enter the pig into a contest.
Opinions on The Last House on the Left are split. Some people think it’s a great horror movie while others think it’s just trashy exploitation. Sure, the acting is shoddy at points particularly in the case of Mari’s parents. The fact that they’re so convincing adds dimension to the horror element. After they change out of their bloody clothes, the gang goes to the Collingwoods' home, masquerading as traveling salesmen. The gang finds photos of Mari and realizes it is her home.
The group tortures and eventually kills the two girls. After they kill the two girls, the group takes refuge in a nearby house. It has since achieved a cult following and received a nomination for AFI's 100 Years...100 Thrills in 2001. Feature directorial debut for filmmaker Wes Craven, best known for the huge successful "Nightmare on Elm Street" series. In an absolute bloodbath of an online vote, RENFIELD evisceratedthe competition to earn its time in the light of this podcast. Craven and Cunningham met while working on a film called The Art of Marriage (1970), an “adult educational film” or white coater film.
The next morning, Mari and Phyllis are bound, gagged, and put in the trunk of Krug's car and transported to the woods. Phyllis is forced to urinate in her jeans, and Mari and Phyllis are forced to perform sexual acts on each other. Phyllis distracts the kidnappers to give Mari an opportunity to escape but is chased by Sadie and Weasel, while Junior stays behind to guard Mari. Mari tries gaining Junior's trust by giving him her necklace and calling him "Willow". Phyllis stumbles across a cemetery where she is cornered and stabbed by Weasel.
